WHY ARE THE TYPES OF CHEMICAL PEELS?

Chemical peels have become increasingly popular in recent years as a non-invasive way to improve the appearance of the skin. By using a chemical solution to exfoliate and remove the outermost layer of dead skin cells, chemical peels can address a variety of skin concerns, from acne and hyperpigmentation to fine lines and wrinkles. There are three main types of chemical peels: superficial, medium, and deep. Each type of peel offers unique benefits and risks, so it's essential to work with a qualified professional to determine which type of peel is best for your skin and goals. At Rita's Beauty Line Permanent Makeup and Skincare, we specialize in superficial and medium chemical peels in North Carolina & in South Carolina, and we prioritize patient safety and satisfaction above all else

Superficial Chemical Peels

Superficial peels are the mildest form of chemical peels and use a mild acid solution to exfoliate only the outermost layer of skin. These peels are typically made with alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs), such as glycolic acid or salicylic acid, and are great for addressing minor skin issues such as acne, fine lines, and hyperpigmentation. Superficial peels require no downtime and have minimal side effects.

Medium Chemical Peels

Medium peels penetrate deeper into the skin and use a stronger acid solution, such as trichloroacetic acid (TCA), to exfoliate the outer and middle layers of skin. Medium peels can improve the appearance of more moderate skin concerns, such as age spots, wrinkles, and uneven skin tone. These peels typically require a few days of downtime for recovery, and patients may experience redness, peeling, and mild discomfort during the healing process.

Deep Chemical Peels

Deep peels are the most aggressive form of chemical peels and use a strong acid solution, such as phenol, to deeply penetrate the skin and exfoliate multiple layers. Deep peels can address more severe skin issues, such as deep wrinkles and significant sun damage, but require extensive downtime for recovery and can come with more severe side effects such as swelling, redness, and discomfort.

CHEMICAL PEELS FAQS

  • HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO RECOVER FROM A CHEMICAL PEEL?

The recovery time after a chemical peel varies depending on the type of peel used. Superficial peels, which are the mildest form of chemical peels, typically require little to no downtime. Patients can usually resume their normal activities immediately after the treatment. Medium-depth peels, which penetrate deeper into the skin, may require five to seven days for recovery, with residual redness possibly lasting a few months. Deep peels, which are the most aggressive form of chemical peels, reveal new skin in around two weeks, but redness can last for several months. It's important to discuss recovery expectations with your skincare professional before undergoing a chemical peel and follow their post-treatment instructions carefully to minimize the risk of complications and ensure optimal results.

  • ARE CHEMICAL PEELS GOOD FOR YOUR KINS?

When performed by a qualified professional, chemical peels can be good for your skin. Chemical peels work by removing the outer layer of dead skin cells, promoting cell turnover, and stimulating the production of collagen and elastin. This can result in smoother, brighter, and more youthful-looking skin, with improved texture and tone. Chemical peels can also be effective in treating a range of skin concerns, such as acne, hyperpigmentation, fine lines, and wrinkles.

However, it's important to note that chemical peels can be harsh on the skin, especially if performed incorrectly or with the wrong concentration of chemicals. It's essential to work with a qualified professional who can assess your skin type, concerns, and goals and recommend the appropriate type and strength of chemical peel for your individual needs. Additionally, proper aftercare is essential to ensure optimal results and minimize the risk of complications.

That's why it's important to work with a qualified professional, such as the team at Rita's Beauty Line Permanent Makeup and Skincare, when considering a chemical peel. Our professionals have the training and experience necessary to assess your skin type and recommend the appropriate type and strength of chemical peel for your individual needs. We understand the importance of proper aftercare and will provide you with personalized instructions to ensure optimal results and minimize the risk of complications. You can feel confident that you are in good hands with our skilled professionals, who are dedicated to helping you achieve your skincare goals.

  • DOES CHEMICAL PEEL REMOVE PIGMENTATION?

Yes, chemical peels can be effective in reducing the appearance of pigmentation, such as age spots, sun spots, and melasma. Chemical peels work by removing the outer layer of dead skin cells, which can help to reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation and promote cell turnover to reveal brighter, more even-toned skin.

The effectiveness of chemical peels in treating pigmentation depends on several factors, including the type and strength of the peel, the depth of the pigmentation, and the individual's skin type and response to treatment. For some people, multiple sessions may be necessary to achieve the desired results.

It's important to note that while chemical peels can be effective in treating pigmentation, it's also important to take steps to prevent further pigmentation from occurring. This includes wearing sunscreen and protective clothing, avoiding excessive sun exposure, and using skincare products that are specifically formulated to address pigmentation concerns.

  • HOW OFTEN SHOULD I GET A CHEMICAL PEEL?

The frequency at which you should get a chemical peel depends on several factors, including your skin type, the specific concerns you are trying to address, and the type and strength of the peel being used. In general, it is recommended that you wait at least 4 to 6 weeks between chemical peel treatments to allow your skin to fully heal and recover.

For superficial peels, which are milder and have less downtime, you may be able to have them more frequently, such as every 2 to 4 weeks. However, it's important to follow the advice of your skincare professional and not overdo it, as excessive peeling can damage the skin.

For medium-depth and deep peels, which penetrate deeper into the skin and require more recovery time, you may need to wait several months between treatments to allow your skin to fully heal.

It's important to discuss your skincare goals and concerns with your skincare professional and work with them to develop a customized treatment plan that is tailored to your individual needs. They can provide guidance on the appropriate frequency of chemical peel treatments for your skin type and help you achieve the best possible results.

  7. Do not use aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (ex. Advil) for at least 7-10 days prior to a chemical peel.

AFTER CARE

  1. On post peel day 3, you may experience mild to moderate shedding depending on the depth of chemical peel, the number of layers applied, and depth of the chemical peel. There can be dryness and tightness of the skin. Flaking and peeling three days post peel is not uncommon, unless you had a superficial peel. Superficial peels have little to no downtime, so you may not experience shedding.
  2. You may develop small whiteheads, but please note that this IS NOT A BREAKOUT.
  3. If you have a lighter skin complexion, you may notice mild redness after a chemical peel.
  4. Do not peel or pick at the peeling skin. You must allow the skin to flake off naturally. Picking at the peeling skin can cause hyperpigmentation.
  5. Do not apply ice or water to the areas that have been treated. Also, avoid applying makeup on the day of your treatment because the skin needs time to stabilize and rest.
  6. For the first 48 hours after your chemical peel, do not participate in activities that increase body heat and sweat, such as drinking alcohol, exercise/working out, hot tubs, steam rooms, saunas, hot shower spray, swimming, or directing a hair dryer to the treatment area. Internal heating can cause hyperpigmentation.
  7. Golden Rule: Make sure that you are also avoiding direct sun exposure and excessive heat. Continue to use a broad-spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher just as you were prior to your peel.
  8. Make sure to keep your skin well-hydrated with a protective moisturizer. Apply it twice daily or more often if needed to reduce the appearance of flaking.
  9. For five days after your chemical peel, do not have electrolysis, facial waxing, or use depilatories.
  10. Avoid using retinols and glycolic acids for 10 days post peel.
  11. Do not use scrubs, loofahs, exfoliating sponges, or other means of mechanical exfoliation on your face for 7-10 days.
  12. Do not go to a tanning bed for at least two weeks post procedure.
  13. If you are on an acne regimen, delay the use of tretinoin, Retin-A, Differin, Renova, Tazorac, Avage, EpiDuo, or Ziana 5 days post-procedure. However, it is fine to resume using a vitamin C serum five days after your treatment.
  14. It is extremely important that you DO NOT have another chemical peel until your clinician advises you to.
  15. If you notice increased redness, increased hyperpigmentation, or crusting of the skin, contact your doctor or skincare professional.

By following these before and after care tips, you can help prepare your skin for a chemical peel, minimize any potential risks or side effects, and ensure the best possible results.
